Mulled Wine Christmas Chutney
Sweet apples, sharp cranberries and slowly softened red onions make this a properly useful festive chutney. Mulled Wine Spice adds warmth and depth, turning a cheeseboard staple into something that tastes unmistakably Christmassy.
The recipe is excellent for making ahead and also makes a thoughtful homemade gift. Give the flavours a fortnight to settle if possible, although it is delicious as soon as it cools.
🧾 Ingredients
- 500g red onions, finely sliced
- 500g cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced
- 250g fresh or frozen cranberries
- 250ml red wine
- 200ml cider vinegar
- 250g soft brown sugar
- 1½ tbsp Mulled Wine Spice
- 1 tsp fine sea salt
🍴 Instructions
- Put the onions, apples, cranberries, red wine and cider vinegar into a large stainless-steel or preserving pan.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and cook uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions and apples begin to soften.
- Add the brown sugar, Mulled Wine Spice and salt. Stir over low heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Simmer uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring more frequently near the end, until thick and a spoon drawn across the bottom leaves a clear trail.
- Spoon carefully into hot sterilised jars, seal and leave to cool.
- Store unopened in a cool, dark place. Once opened, refrigerate and use within four weeks.

💛 Why This Recipe Works
Cooking the fruit in wine and vinegar before adding the sugar lets it soften properly. The final slow reduction concentrates the fruit while keeping the chutney spoonable rather than jammy.
