Classic Mulled Wine with Mulled Wine Spice

Classic homemade mulled red wine served steaming in clear glass mugs with orange and warming winter spices.

Few drinks make a winter evening feel as welcoming as a pan of gently steaming mulled wine. Mulled Wine Spice brings the warming festive aromatics together in one easy blend, so there is no hunting through the cupboard for half a dozen separate spices.

The secret is to warm the wine slowly without letting it boil. That protects its fruitiness and gives the orange and spice time to infuse without becoming bitter.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 x 750ml bottle fruity red wine
  • 200ml cloudy apple juice
  • 1 orange
  • 1 tbsp Mulled Wine Spice
  • 2 tbsp runny honey or soft brown sugar, plus more to taste
  • 50ml brandy, optional
  • Orange slices, to serve

🍴 Instructions

  1. Pour the red wine and apple juice into a medium saucepan.
  2. Use a vegetable peeler to remove two wide strips of zest from the orange, avoiding too much white pith. Add the zest and squeeze in the juice of half the orange.
  3. Stir in the Mulled Wine Spice and honey or brown sugar.
  4. Warm over a low heat for 20 minutes until steaming and fragrant. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
  5. Taste and add a little more honey if needed. Stir in the brandy, if using, for the final minute.
  6. Strain into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve with fresh orange slices.

🥗 Serving Suggestions

For a relaxed gathering, keep the mulled wine warm on the lowest hob setting and set out heatproof glasses. A plate of mince pies, shortbread or mature cheese makes an excellent companion.

💛 Why This Recipe Works

Apple juice softens the wine and adds natural sweetness, while gentle heat draws out the spice without cooking away the fresh fruit character or making the drink taste harsh.
