Mixed Sweet Spice Plum & Apple Chutney

Chunky homemade plum and apple chutney flavoured with mixed sweet spice, served with mature cheddar and oat crackers.

Rich plums, sharp apples and warm Mixed Sweet Spices make this deeply flavoured chutney a natural partner for mature cheese and cold meats. The blend adds cinnamon, clove, fennel, ginger and mustard in one step, building complexity without a long list of spice jars.

The chutney becomes richer after a few days in the fridge, so it is a useful make-ahead addition to grazing boards and festive lunches.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 500g plums, stoned and chopped
  • 2 Bramley apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1 large red onion, finely chopped
  • 250ml cider vinegar
  • 250g soft brown sugar
  • 1½ tsp Mixed Sweet Spices
  • ½ tsp sea salt

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Put the plums, apples, onion, vinegar, sugar, Mixed Sweet Spices and salt into a wide, heavy-based saucepan.
  2. Warm gently, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook uncovered for 60–75 minutes. Stir more frequently towards the end so it does not catch.
  4. The chutney is ready when it is thick and glossy and a spoon drawn across the base leaves a clear trail for a moment.
  5. Spoon into clean, sterilised jars while hot and seal. Allow to cool completely.
  6. Refrigerate once cool and leave for 2–3 days before eating if possible, allowing the flavours to settle.

🧀 Serving Suggestions

Serve with mature Cheddar, pork pie, baked ham or a ploughman’s lunch. Once opened, keep refrigerated and use within four weeks.

💛 Why This Recipe Works

Plums provide jammy richness, Bramley apples bring acidity and natural pectin, and the vinegar keeps the chutney lively. Slow cooking concentrates everything into a spoonable, chunky relish.
