Mixed Sweet Spice Apple & Pear Crumble

Homemade apple and pear crumble with a golden oat topping and mixed sweet spice, served with warm custard.

This apple and pear crumble is everything a proper pudding should be: juicy fruit, a deeply golden topping and plenty of warm spice. Our Mixed Sweet Spices brings cinnamon, clove, fennel, ginger and nutmeg together in one easy spoonful, giving the filling a rich aroma without overpowering the fruit.

Serve it bubbling from the oven with warm custard, cream or vanilla ice cream. It is simple enough for Sunday lunch and comforting enough for a rainy midweek evening.

🧾 Ingredients

For the fruit

  • 3 eating apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
  • 3 ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
  • 75g light brown sugar
  • 1½ tsp Mixed Sweet Spices
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornflour

For the crumble

  • 150g plain flour
  • 100g rolled oats
  • 120g cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 100g light brown sugar
  • Pinch of sea salt

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C, 170°C fan or Gas 5.
  2. Put the apples and pears into a medium baking dish. Add the brown sugar, Mixed Sweet Spices, lemon juice and cornflour, then toss until evenly coated.
  3. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles rough crumbs. Stir in the oats, sugar and salt, keeping a few larger buttery pieces for texture.
  4. Scatter the crumble mixture loosely over the fruit without pressing it down.
  5. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling around the edges.
  6. Rest for 10 minutes before serving so the juices thicken slightly.

🍨 Serving Suggestions

Serve warm with custard, clotted cream or vanilla ice cream. Leftovers are excellent reheated for breakfast with thick yoghurt.

💛 Why This Recipe Works

Pears add floral sweetness while apples provide gentle sharpness. The mixed spice rounds out both fruits, and the oat topping stays rustic and crisp rather than becoming heavy.

🌿 Try It With

For extra warmth, add a small pinch of Ground Cinnamon or Ground Nutmeg.
