Chinese Five Spice Slow-Cooked Beef Stew
This Chinese Five Spice Slow-Cooked Beef Stew is rich, warming and deeply aromatic. Beef, mushrooms and carrots simmer gently in a glossy savoury sauce until the meat becomes spoon-tender.
Made with our Chinese Five Spice, it brings a distinctive balance of sweet, warm and savoury spice to everyday cooking.
🥣 Ingredients
- 900g braising beef, cut into chunks
- 2 tsp Chinese Five Spice
- 1 onion, sliced
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 20g fresh ginger, sliced
- 250g mushrooms, halved
- 3 carrots, cut into chunks
- 500ml beef stock
- 4 tbsp light soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Steamed greens and rice, to serve
🍳 Instructions
- Heat the oil in a casserole dish and brown the beef in batches. Set aside.
- Cook the onion for 5 minutes, then add the garlic, ginger and Five Spice for 1 minute.
- Return the beef and add the stock, soy sauce and honey. Bring to a simmer.
- Cover and cook at 160°C/140°C fan/gas 3 for 2 hours.
- Add the mushrooms and carrots, then cook uncovered for another 35–40 minutes until tender and the sauce has reduced. Serve with rice and greens.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions
Serve with steamed jasmine rice, mashed potatoes or noodles and plenty of greens. The flavour is even better when reheated the following day.
