Bengali Five Spice Tomato Chutney

Homemade Bengali Five Spice tomato chutney with softened tomatoes, onion and whole aromatic seeds.

🍅 Bengali Five Spice Tomato Chutney

This Bengali Five Spice Tomato Chutney is sweet, tangy and packed with aromatic whole-seed flavour. Ripe tomatoes and onion cook slowly with vinegar, brown sugar and our Bengali Five Spice blend until thick and glossy.

Serve it with curries, cheese, sandwiches, cold meats or a simple sharing board.

🥣 Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable or rapeseed oil
  • 2 tsp Bengali Five Spice blend
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1kg ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • 150g light brown sugar
  • 150ml apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp chilli flakes, optional

⏱ Timings

  • Preparation: 15 minutes
  • Cooking: 55–65 minutes
  • Makes: approximately 600ml

🍳 How to Make Bengali Five Spice Tomato Chutney

  1. Heat the oil in a heavy-based saucepan. Add the Bengali Five Spice and cook for 30 seconds until the seeds begin to sizzle.
  2. Add the onion and cook gently for 8–10 minutes until soft.
  3. Add the tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, ginger, salt and optional chilli flakes. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook uncovered for 45–55 minutes, stirring more frequently as it thickens.
  5. The chutney is ready when a spoon drawn across the bottom leaves a brief clear trail.
  6. Spoon into clean heatproof containers, allow to cool, then cover and refrigerate.

🧀 Serving Suggestions

Serve with curry, dal, roast potatoes, cheese and crackers, sandwiches or cold meats. It also makes a flavourful glaze for roasted vegetables.

✨ Why This Recipe Works

Slow cooking concentrates the tomatoes while sugar and vinegar create a balanced sweet-and-tangy finish. Tempering the whole seeds first carries their aroma throughout the chutney.

ℹ️ Storage

This is a refrigerator chutney rather than a tested shelf-stable preserve. Keep covered in the fridge and use within two weeks. Always use a clean spoon.
