Crispy Bengali Five Spice Roast Potatoes

Crispy Bengali Five Spice roast potatoes with toasted whole seeds, coriander and lemon on a rustic roasting tray.

🥔 Crispy Bengali Five Spice Roast Potatoes

These Crispy Bengali Five Spice Roast Potatoes are golden outside, fluffy in the middle and coated with the fragrant crunch of our Bengali Five Spice blend. Briefly heating the whole seeds in oil releases their aroma before the potatoes roast until deeply crisp.

They make a delicious change from ordinary roast potatoes and work with curries, grilled meat, fish or a Sunday roast.

🥣 Ingredients

  • 1kg floury potatoes, such as Maris Piper, peeled and cut into even chunks
  • 3 tbsp rapeseed or vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp Bengali Five Spice blend
  • ½ tsp salt, plus extra for the cooking water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Fresh coriander, optional

⏱ Timings

  • Preparation: 15 minutes
  • Cooking: 50–55 minutes
  • Serves: 4

🍳 How to Make Bengali Five Spice Roast Potatoes

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan and place a sturdy roasting tray inside.
  2. Put the potatoes in salted water, bring to the boil and simmer for 8–10 minutes until the edges begin to soften.
  3. Drain thoroughly, return to the pan and shake gently to roughen the edges. Leave uncovered for 5 minutes so excess moisture can escape.
  4. Warm the oil in a small pan over a medium heat. Add the Bengali Five Spice and cook for 30–45 seconds, just until the seeds begin to sizzle and smell fragrant. Do not let them burn.
  5. Carefully add the spiced oil to the hot roasting tray, followed by the potatoes and salt. Turn until evenly coated.
  6. Roast for 40–45 minutes, turning twice, until crisp and golden.
  7. Finish with lemon juice and coriander, if using.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

Serve alongside dal, chicken curry or grilled fish. They are also excellent with cooling yoghurt, mango chutney or a fried egg.

✨ Why This Recipe Works

Parboiling and roughing the edges creates the crisp surface, while tempering the whole seeds first releases their flavour throughout the oil.
