Smokey Bean Black Bean Burgers

Homemade Smokey Bean black bean burgers with avocado yoghurt and sweet potato wedges.

A homemade bean burger should have texture, not resemble a smooth paste. These patties combine roughly crushed black beans and oats with Smokey Bean for deep barbecue-style flavour and no chilli heat.

They hold together well in a pan or on a solid barbecue plate, and the cool avocado yoghurt makes a fresh contrast.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 2 x 400g tins black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 80g rolled oats
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1½ tbsp Smokey Bean
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 100g natural yoghurt or dairy-free alternative
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Lettuce and tomato, to serve

🍴 Instructions

  1. Pat the black beans dry. Mash roughly in a bowl, leaving plenty of whole and broken beans visible.
  2. Stir in the oats, onion, Smokey Bean, tomato purée and flour. Leave for 10 minutes, then shape into four patties.
  3. Mix the avocado, yoghurt and lime juice, keeping some avocado texture.
  4. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until crisp and heated through.
  5. Toast the buns lightly.
  6. Layer the lettuce, tomato, patties and avocado yoghurt in the buns and serve.

Add sweet potato wedges, corn on the cob or crunchy slaw for a relaxed meat-free barbecue meal.

💛 Why This Recipe Works

Dry beans and a short resting time help the oats absorb moisture, giving patties that stay together while retaining a coarse homemade texture.
